Medications to Quit and stay Tobacco-Free
Medications like nicotine replacement therapy (gum or patches) can ease cravings and withdrawal, making it easier to stop smoking. Unlike quitting cold turkey, these treatments boost your comfort and success during smoking cessation.
With your DC Quit Now Program, you may receive a free Quit Kit—delivered to your home in the District of Columbia—with the tools you need to start your journey toward a smoke-free life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) reduces the discomfort after quitting by replacing the nicotine from cigarettes with nicotine from things like patches, gum, and lozenges.

Prescription Medications
There are currently two quit-smoking pills approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Bupropion and Varenicline. Check with your insurance provider about coverage for prescription medications.
Combined Approaches
Studies show that combining nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) with prescription medications gives you the best chance to quit smoking and stay tobacco-free. Many people benefit from using both the nicotine patch (a long-acting NRT) and short-acting options like gum or lozenges to better manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
Even more effective? Combining medication with counseling. The DC Quit for Life Program offers access to both expert support and proven tools to help you stop smoking for good.
Most prescription smoking cessation medications are covered by insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid (though not through the Quit for Life Program). Talk to your doctor or health care provider to see what’s right for you.
Now is your time to quit smoking for good.
